A Little Bit of Rock Climbing History

You've got to love a climbing coach who gives his team homework, especially written homework. You should have heard the moans and groans as the papers were handed out. I figured that the kids would have to go online to find the answers and wanted to see if any of them look at the blog so I am posting the answers here.

Question 1: Who is Alan Watts? What was his great contribution to American rock climbing?

Answer: Alan Watts, the one climber most familiar with -- and responsible for -- Smith Rock's climb to prominence as an international sport climbing Mecca.

Alan's entire climbing career is inextricably entwined with the recent past of Smith Rock, the remote central Oregon crag that now ranks among the world's elite climbing destinations. It was Alan and other local climbers that spearheaded the events taking place over the last twenty years, the events that put Smith Rock on the map and created the entirely new classification of

Answer: John Sherman (born 1959), nicknamed Verm (short for "Vermin") is an American climber and a pioneering boulderer. He is also a writer and photographer. He is the originator of the V-scale for grading boulder problems. (keep reading)
