Jeff's Tip of The Week

Jeff, Kat, and Kevin

You be the Coach!

A great way to gain a better understanding of climbing movement is to watch
how others do it. For this next week, whether you are belaying or spotting,
try to observe your climbing partner's technique and offer some advice.

Don't forget, optional climbing practice this Saturday from 12:00-2:30ish. See you there!

Answer To This Week's Challenge

Once again I have messed up the Weekly Challenge. The answer to "whose middle name is Arnold?" is Steven, I mean Andrew. The answer to the second part is Taryn, only I put the wrong school in the question. She really goes to Willow Springs, not Sprucewood. Anyway, Aspen managed to figure it out so she won the free smoothie. Congratulations Aspen!

Stay tuned for this week's Coaches' Tip....

New Weekly Challenge

Okay, apparently this week's challenge was unfair because Reed was not going to be at climbing and he hasn't been for several weeks. Still, he did come a few times and he competed in the comp at the Quarry. So, happy birthday Jackson and Reed.

Now, on to a new Weekly Challenge:

Which team member's middle name is Arnold and which team member is a member of the Student Council at Sprucewood Elementary?

The first team member to successfully answer both these questions by posting a comment to this blog post will get a free smoothie in the cafe. Good luck!

Weekly Challenge

This is the first of what will hopefully be a long list of Weekly Challenges. The Weekly Challenge will be a trivia question, more often than not, about one or more of the Team Momentum climbers to encourage them to get to know one another better. Of course, being kids, that may not be enough of an incentive to find the answer to the question so the winner will receive a free smoothie in the Momentum Cafe.

So, here is how it will work: I will post the question and the first team member who correctly answers it by posting a comment to the blog post, will win. :)

With that said, here is this week's challenge:

Which team member celebrates their birthday today, October 26, and which team member celebrates their birthday tomorrow, October 27?

I'll give you a hint: it isn't any of the faces in this picture. Also, please post first names only in your answer since we are on the internet here.

Steven's Tip of the Week

Welcome to one of our new features, the Coaches' Tip of the Week. This is basically some technique tip that Jeff, Steven, or Ty give the team members to work on during the off days between Wednesday practices and Monday practices. The coaches feel strongly that if the kids really want to get stronger and improve their climbing skills, that they need to spend time outside of regular practice hours working on their climbing. This week's tip is:

Exaggerate Movements

If you don't know what this means, the team members should and they can explain it, or better yet, show you when they go to the gym for extra practice. :)

UEA Weekend Climbing Trip Recap

Jeff, Kat, and Kevin
Jeff, Kat and Kevin figuring out the routes at Crawdad Canyon

We had a great turnout this past weekend for our climbing/camping trip in the St. George area. I think the owner of Outdoor Outlet in St. George just about had a heart attack when more than thirty people showed up in his parking lot first thing Friday morning. Six of them were Team Momentum members, one was a Team Quarry member and the rest were family members of the team kids, gym owners, and Momentum employees.

We all had one thing in common though, we were headed to Crawdad Canyon to climb and the nice man at Outdoor Outlet was the keeper of the key that would get us in the locked gate. (Okay, we all had to turn in waivers and pay a fee as well since it is private property that is closed for the season.)

Smeagol
Smeag being, well, Smeag

Crawdad Canyon is not what you would call a "hardcore climbers' paradise", but if you like to climb, like to camp, and have a family that likes to do the same, this is a beautiful and fun destination.

They haven't even camped yet!
Happy Campers Kat, Missy, Sarah and Aspen

Friday evening, the crazy people of the group, drove out to a very remote corner of southwestern Utah. There was some discussion about which state we were actually in because Jeff's phone switched to Pacific Time. But after returning home and pulling up Black and Tan (the crag we went to) on Mountain Project (it shows you where the crag is on Google Maps), we could see that we were about a half to one mile north of the Arizona border and a couple miles east of the Nevada border. We camped on BLM land, which wasn't too bad until the wind kicked up at 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Of course, the Sanderson crew got the worst of it. When they went to set up their tent, they found they had no tent poles or stakes. Fortunately the wind died down by 9:00 Saturday morning.

We met up with the rest of the party (the house dwellers) and spent the morning and part of the afternoon on Kelly's Wall. We spent the remainder of the afternoon on Black and Tan. Both these crags are limestone and extremely rough. Well, not rough exactly, more like climbing on thousands of tiny needles. It was an incredible experience though and everyone seemed to have a great time. I was a little disappointed that we didn't see any Mojave Green Rattle Snakes (I was promised that I would) but we did see a tarantula and the spine of some dead animal that Jeff claims he killed in order to protect us.

Is it right over left or the other way?
"Right-over-left, or was it left-over-right?"

Derek Larsen invited those of us that had been camping to spend Saturday night in the house he and his family had been staying in. After two long days climbing and the windy night we had spent on the desert, we all decided to take him up on his offer. So fourteen dirty, tired climbers/campers crashed on the floor of a vacant house with no hot water in Santa Clara. We were thrilled that the house had flushing toilets and no wind.

Campfire
Friday night's campfire gang

Sunday morning we all loaded up our gear and pointed our vehicles northward. We figured we might run into a little bit of traffic heading home due to other people returning from deer hunting but the roads were fine until we hit Provo. All of a sudden the traffic backed up. Sadly, it wasn't due to an accident. People decided to slow down so they could watch the fascinating striping machine painting new lines on the highway!

It was a very exciting weekend! To see the rest of the pictures taken on the trip, click here.

To see more photos from the comp, click on the picture of Sam and you will be rerouted to Flickr.

The next comp is the Deadpoint comp on Saturday, October 25, at the Front in Salt Lake City. See the team calendar for times and a map. It is not an ABS sanctioned competition so it won't count towards the two necessary competitions in order to go to Regionals, but it should be a lot of fun and a great experience.

We're looking forward to a great time in St. George this weekend and hope to come back with some great photos as well as great stories.

A Little Bit of Rock Climbing History

You've got to love a climbing coach who gives his team homework, especially written homework. You should have heard the moans and groans as the papers were handed out. I figured that the kids would have to go online to find the answers and wanted to see if any of them look at the blog so I am posting the answers here.

Question 1: Who is Alan Watts? What was his great contribution to American rock climbing?

Answer: Alan Watts, the one climber most familiar with -- and responsible for -- Smith Rock's climb to prominence as an international sport climbing Mecca.

Alan's entire climbing career is inextricably entwined with the recent past of Smith Rock, the remote central Oregon crag that now ranks among the world's elite climbing destinations. It was Alan and other local climbers that spearheaded the events taking place over the last twenty years, the events that put Smith Rock on the map and created the entirely new classification of
sport climbing. (keep reading)

Question 2: Who is John Sherman? In what way has he influenced American bouldering?

Answer: John Sherman (born 1959), nicknamed Verm (short for "Vermin") is an American climber and a pioneering boulderer. He is also a writer and photographer. He is the originator of the V-scale for grading boulder problems. (keep reading)

Climbing Team Pricing/Payment Options

There was some discussion last Saturday at the parent meeting about pricing options. Instead of one option, the following choices are now available:

EFT: Electronic Funds Transfer billed on the 5th of each month.
PIF: Paid in Full

EFT Month to Month: $100 per month; $85 sibling discount.

(1 day per week rate: $60 per month; sibling discount $50.)

EFT Contract (12 mos): $90 per month; $75 per month sibling discount.
Cancellation fees would apply just like a membership contract for those who
end the contract early.

1 year PIF: $1,000; $700 sibling discount

In addition to EFT and paid in full options, any parent may opt to pay by
check or credit card month to month, at the same non-contract rates shown
above. Payments are due by the 5th of each month.

These prices are Climbing Team Dues and are in addition to Membership Fees. A membership at Momentum Climbing is required to be on the climbing team.

We want the parents of our climbing team members to be as knowledgeable as possible about the sport their children are involved in. Therefore, a bonus that we offer to our parents is, mothers of our team members are invited to participate in the monthly Women Experience Rock Climbing (W.E.R.C.) class for free. The normal cost on this is $25 for non gym members and $10 for gym members. In November, the W.E.R.C. class meets on November 4 from 7:00-9:00 pm. Starting in December 2008, it will meet the second Tuesday of each month from 7:00-9:00 pm.

We also offer a monthly climbing class for the fathers of our team members that is taught by Coach Jeff Pedersen and Coach Steven Jeffery for free. The fathers' climbing class will meet on November 10 from 6:30-8:00 pm and beginning in December 2008 will meet the first Monday of each month from 6:30-8:00 pm.

This is a fantastic opportunity that every parent should take advantage of!
