Thursday, July 2, 2009

I apologize for not staying on top of updating the blog, especially with all of the exciting things that have been going on over the last two months with Regional competition, the trip to City of Rocks, and Divisional competition. I will try to post some links to some of the albums that people have emailed me from these different events. I am posting one picture from the trip Sarah, Rachel and I took to the City this past weekend.

I'm not sure whose backside we are looking at here but (no pun intended) I think it is Aaron's, the coach of the Bozeman team. This shot was taken by Andy Sherfius III. Recognize this route Rachel?

That being said, SCS Nationals is upon u
s and I know we are going to have some great images come from that comp as well. However, the gym will have some limitations over the next week so read on.

Prior to the comp, beginning July 6, there will be routesetting going on in the main rope area. Only the South, West, and North sides of the tower, the crack walls, and the bouldering area will be open to climbing. All lead areas, and the East side of the tower (facing the window) will be closed to climbing until Monday July 13.

During the comp the gym will be closed to climbing- July 10, 11 and 12.
Spectators will be allowed in the gym during comp hours on July 11 and 12. There will be no room for spectators (other than family members and coaches) in the gym on Friday July 10. Saturday/Sunday spectator fee is $5. Family members, teammates and coaches of athletes are free.

Don't forget that we will be practicing at the Quarry on Monday and Wednesday, July 6 & 8, from 4:30-6:30 pm.

I hope that everyone has a fantastic and safe 4th of July!

Happy Mother's Day!

I just want to wish all you rockin' moms a Happy Mother's Day! Without you, well, the team wouldn't be what it is and I wouldn't have all these great kids to hang out with and learn amazing things from.

Thank you!
ps-I found a really funny video like the Cinco De Mayo one but for Mother's Day but the only mom whose head I have a decent front view image of is mine and that would be just a little weird.

Premiere Night of the New Star Trek Movie

I just wanted to share these great shots that were taken at Jordan Commons tonight. Some coworkers and I were handing out literature about the gym at a booth we had during the premiere of the new Star Trek movie. Okay, "great shots" may be a stretch since they were taken with a camera phone.

It was Star Trek mania!

This guy refers to himself as "Stretch". I'm guessing that is because he is quite tall, although you can't tell in this picture because he is bent over. He gave me his business card so that I could email him a copy of this image. Some guy came up and asked him if he was a member of one of the sci-fi clubs that was at the premiere and he said he wasn't. He's just a freelance "Wharf" and he was at The Gateway during Thursday night 's premiere and got to be on channel 5 news. Does that make me a celebrity by association?

This is me with my new, good friend Lee. He let me hold his phaser!

So, this nice family was all decked out. The dad, the guy on the left in the helmet, had a little Sci-Fi confusion going on. Under the Darth Vader helmet and cape, he was dressed like the rest of the guys; except for the white gym socks. Classic! The person on his right in the white capris, that's grandma. She was bursting with pride at her lovely brood!

This is a Teletubby prayer circle except they swapped the purple one for a blue one.
Moms and Dads of climbing team and Base Camp members, next week is a special WERC night and DORC has been moved to Wednesday, May 13.

A special edition of WERC, the ladies will be climbing outside at Red Rock on South Mountain in Draper. You can meet at Momentum at 6 pm or, if you know how to get to Red Rock, you can meet in the parking lot at 6pm. Bring your harnesses, shoes, ropes, draws, belay devices, helmets if you have them, and be ready to experience the great outdoors. Since this is not a Momentum affiliated event, there is no charge for it. We will have two certified guides with us though to make sure we stay safe and do things properly.

Dads, DORC will be held Wednesday night from 6:30-8:00 pm, right after practice. Jeff will be back so I'm sure there will be great skills to be learned. This class is free to dads of competitive team members and only $10 for Base Camp dads.

Come join in the fun!

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Our friend Hayden has told me that he can't really climb hard because of some trauma to his hands. Make sure you ask him about it next time you see him. At least he can still dance!

Team Mo Rocks Momentum!

The Momentum youth climbing teams flexed their muscles and delivered some rockin' results Saturday, April 25, as Momentum hosted its local SCS Youth Competition.

The first surprise of the day was that Momentum's Base Camp team turned out en force. Nobody (except themselves and their parents I imagine) knew they were coming to compete but compete they did. 8 year old power house, Maisy Hayes, stormed in and snatched 3rd place in the Female Youth D division scoring not far below Ellise Shuman who tied for 1st place with the ever present Amber Coleman of Boise. First time competitors Aislin Meegan, Katie Tenney, and Katelyn Loveridge displayed some amazing tenacity throughout the comp as they clung, seemingly tirelessly, to the wall trying to overcome their lack of height. It paid off as Aislin walked away with 5th place, Katelyn with 6th, and Katie right behind them with a competitor's ribbon.

In the Male Youth D division, brothers Kaden and Kyler Hunter, sons of Mike and Jaci Hunter, showed us what they're made of (or who they're made by) as they finished 3rd and 5th respectively. Despite his 6th place finish last week in Bozeman and a lot of fight yesterday, Caleb Bloodworth scored just below Weston Bradburn and took home a competitor ribbon while Weston finished 6th. In his first climbing competition ever, Jeremy Starwalt also brought home a competitor ribbon.

The Female Youth C and Male Youth C divisions were dominated by Team Momentum. Sarah Legg, who has been a major contender all season, showed up with a secret weapon. She was sporting a new "Jaci Hunter" hairstyle and it apparently did the trick because Sarah walked away with the blue ribbon yesterday leaving Bozeman's strong girl, Bridget Creel, with the red one. Right on Bridget's heels and, as pleased with herself as we were of her, was Rachel Wedge, taking 3rd place. Coming off of a two week vacation, Katie Shuman delivered a respectable 4th place performance while an enthusiastic Autumn Cushing happily received her 6th place ribbon. Despite their determination, Taryn Rodman and Amanda Starwalt finished just outside of 6th place.

On the boys' side in Youth C, Nathaniel Coleman showed us that he is back and he's recovered from his broken hand because he snatched the 1st place ribbon from teammate Ben Tresco, who has taken 1st in the last two comps. Ben was strong the entire competition but on his last climb, Nathaniel managed to score just enough points to bump Ben into 2nd place. Cole Bradburn brought his new little sister Lola, along with mom and dad, to watch him bring home the 3rd place ribbon. Charles Zimmerman edged past Hayden Hernandez for 4th place leaving Hayden with the 5th place ribbon. Alex Tresco and newcomer, Jared Phillips accepted competitor ribbons. Hang in there Alex, next year Ben will be torturing your brother, Sam.

There was some tough competition in the Female Youth B division yesterday as well. Kat Holbrook and Aspen Sanderson took on Inge Perkins and Andie Creel from Team Bozeman and the Crotteau sisters of Boise Peak Fitness. Kat clawed her way to an amazing 3rd place finish and Aspen held on to take 6th.

A mere 55 points separated the top three finishers in the Male Youth B division. The eldest Tresco brother, Sam, took 2nd place in Pocatello, 3rd in Bozeman and bumped himself back up to 2nd yesterday. Palmer Larsen finished right behind him in 3rd. Teammates Josh Kilmer and Connor Gajdos took the competitor ribbons. Watch out for all four of these boys next year. They are going to be tough to beat!

While all this excitement was taking place on the vertical surfaces of Momentum, the tireless, enthusiastic Annette Hernandez wasn't taking no for an answer as she, and several other Team Momentum parents, sold a myriad of baked goods and drinks to keep the sugar highs of the competitors and their families going strong! They raised just over $230 for Team Mo yesterday. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to make this fundraiser happen and a huge thanks to Aaron Hjelt, regional coordinator for the Big Sky Region, as well as the hardworking employees, headed up yesterday by Tyler Cline, of Momentum. You guys are the best and none of this would be possible without the efforts of all of you! Thank you as well to our amazing coaches Jeff Pedersen, Ty Hansen, Swan and Ian. Without you guys, well, what would we have to look forward to?

As a side note, while the rest of Team Momentum was climbing the walls, honorary team member Missy Legg, was dancing her heart out in her own competition. Her dance company won a 2nd place trophy that they will proudly display in their studio. Someday we hope to see her put those mad dance skills to work on the vertical. I know she'd be great at it! :)

Congratulations Bradburns!

The Bradburn family was blessed with a new addition today! Lola Mae Bradburn was born at 6:06 a.m., March 3, 2009. She is 20 inches long and weighed 8 pounds 2 ounces.

Reed and his new sister

Reed and Lola Bradburn

So far I have had one person answer the last "Weekly Challenge" and she is not even going to Indian Creek! In case you forgot, answering the previous challenge is required of anyone who is planning on going to Indian Creek at the end of March.

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

Sorry about the delay in posting a new challenge. The winner of the last challenge was Kat Holbrook and Sarah Wong as well as coach Ty and Angie Miske, mother of Base Camp member Dallin. Thanks for being diligent about answering the questions!

As I said in the email I sent out earlier, this week's challenge is mandatory for anyone planning to go on the Indian Creek climbing trip. Oh no! Mandatory! Parents, please feel free to help with this assignment.

  1. Explain the "Indian Creek Recreation Plan"
  2. Why is it important?
  3. What can we as climbers do to help preserve access to areas like Indian Creek for future generations?
Write at least 3 paragraphs and bring them to practice with you before March 27.

So far, Sarah W. is the closest to earning her reward with 2 Weekly Challenges completed. Kat, Katie S., and Ellise S. have all completed 1 challenge on their way to 5. Keep up the good work guys!

Nikhil Kolluri
Nik is almost 9 years old and is in 3rd grade at Sunrise Elementary school. He loves to eat beef fajitas and drink orange cream soda. Nik has one brother named Akaash who is 4 years old.

Nik joined the Base Camp Climbing Team at the beginning of December. He prefers bouldering over sport climbing and is really looking forward to climbing in Big Cottonwood Canyon this summer.

Besides rock climbing, Nik likes to hang with his friends, particularly Dylan. Of all the holidays, Nik like to celebrate his own birthday the best. When he needs some down time, Nik likes to watch "Man versus Food" or listen to music by "Queen". The person he most looks up to is his dad.

The pets in Nik's household are a bearded dragon named "Nibbles" and a dog named "Bizkit".

Someday, Nik would like to go on vacation to Mexico. If he had a million dollars, Nik would invest some of it so it could make him more money and he would use the rest to buy a really fancy house. Since he wants to be an architect when he grows up, maybe Nik could design his really fancy house. Then he could have a really fancy bouldering wall built in it.

Congratulations Nik! Thanks for being such a wonderful member of the Base Camp team of Team Momentum.

Congratulations Sarah W.!

Sarah was the only one last week whose answer to the Weekly Challenge I received. The answer to last week's question is:

Skyler Weekes holds the world-dyno-record at 8.69 feet.
In October 2008, he almost tied his record with an 8.5-foot dyno in Clear Creek Canyon, Colorado.
It took Skyler 76 days to finally send this project.

That's a lot of dyno!

This week's challenge:

Spend enough time in climbing and you may hear the phrase "before sticky rubber". What is "sticky rubber", and how did it change rock climbing? When did it first arrive in the US and through which shoe company was it distributed? Who was the high-profile American rock climber that helped make the first "sticky rubber" shoes famous?

What is the current world-dyno-record and who is it held by? In October 2008, he almost tied his record. How long did it take for him to send this problem and how long was the dyno?

If you ever wanted to try your hands (and feet) at a climbing competition but didn't know where to start, there is a citizen's division during SCS Adult Nationals at Momentum, Sunday, January 25. So, even if you climb 5.9's on toprope, you can compete. It's a friendly atmosphere with lots of awards and prizes and only $25 for Momentum members.

For more information, contact Michelle Legg@801.259.6456 or Momentum@801.990.6890.

We are also having a bake sale during the competitions to help support the Momentum Youth Climbing Teams. We will need lots of help selling goodies as well as people to provide things for us to sell. Please contact Michelle for more information.

The winner of last week's challenge was
Sarah L.!

Here's her answer:

~Randy Leavitt bolted the route 16 years ago.
(Hmmm, where have we heard that name before?)

~The route is being called Jumbo Love, which follows the naming convention of other routes at Clark Mt.’s 3rd Tier/Monastery area. The other routes are Randy Leavitt’s Jumbo Pumping Hate (5.13d/14a) and Ethan Pringle’s Jumbo Glass (5.14c).

Answer to Bonus Question:

Now on to this week's challenge!

"Intensive Care" is a climbing route somewhere in Utah.
  • Where is it? (which canyon is it in)
  • How many pitches long is it?
  • Which pitch is the crux?
  • How did the route get it's name?
  • Which of the route's first ascensionists has done work for both the Quarry and Momentum?
