We have one more local competition in Nampa, Idaho next Saturday, May 8 and then Big Sky Region Finals will be held May 15, at The Quarry in Provo. I will be posting the schedule for that shortly. See ya in Provo!

*Just a note that there was a scoring error that I was made aware of after I originally did this blog post. In the MYC division, Nathaniel Coleman wasn't given credit for a route he completed. His official final score was 5975 and Tavray Ma'e's was 5800.

Bozeman SCS Local Comp Results

The annual Spring Fling in Bozeman, Montana at Spire Climbing Center was, once again, a successful and fun event. With the SCS local youth event on Saturdays, the party kicks off on Friday evenings each year with an adult comp so the routes can be fore run to make sure they are suitable for the youth the next day. A big thanks to Jeff Ho, owner/operator of Spire, for basically shutting down his gym for 3-4 days in order for this event to take place.

Saturday's youth comp was attended by 45-50 kids from around the Big Sky Region. The Helena Thunder Chickens, Bozeman Climbing Team, and Billings Steep Team made up the majority of competitors, with the John Jackson Rock Stars out of Boise, and Team Momentum rounding out the field.

Team Momentum was represented by two-A Team members, two-B Team members, and two-Jr. Competitive Team members. All six girls made an impressive showing and represented Momentum well.

Kami and Lienne Cupal, both in division D (10 years old and under) were both brand new to competition and had their first experience climbing on routes marked with tape instead of the constant colored holds that they are used to. It took a little bit for them to get used to it but then they did great.

Vera Zanker has competed in a few bouldering comps during the bouldering season but this was her first sport comp. Once a climber is in division B (13-14 years old), they lead climb in competition but it isn't required in local competitions. Since Vera has just recently started lead climbing, nobody expected that she would try it at the comp. However, she decided to surprise us all and she did a fantastic job! It is obvious that she has had a great instructor. Way to go Vera!

One lead route was set that was worth 950 points which made it about a 5.9-5.10a grade route. It was a fairly juggy route up an overhanging wall. There was a challenge given that if a climber could campus the route, they would receive 1200 points instead of the 950 you'd get if you used your feet. At the adult comp Friday night, there were two men that tried campusing the route. One of them made it. On Saturday, there were a couple of older teenage boys that tried campusing the route. One of them made it to the chains as well. For Amanda Starwalt, the gauntlet had been thrown down. There was no way that she was going to let this comp end without trying to campus that route. While Amanda didn't quite make it to the chains, on her first go, (yeah, she tried it more than once) she was only a couple holds shy of finishing it. Had it been a couple hours earlier, she would have made it. Amanda followed up that feat by getting on the route that climbs the steepest wall of the gym and then proceeds to traverse the roof section.

While Rachel Wedge opted to not take the challenge of campusing, she did tackle the route on the steep wall and proceeded out onto the roof as well. Twice.

Sarah Legg started out strong, keeping pace with Rachel and Amanda but she came into this comp spending the week fighting off yet another cold. Tack on a long (high energy) drive, a late night babysitting, and a fairly sleepless night shivering under a very thin blanket. Still, she hung in there and gave it all she had.

Following are the places the girls finished in their respective divisions:

Female Youth B:
  1. Rachel - 2nd
  2. Amanda - 4th
  3. Sarah - 5th
  4. Vera - 6th
Female Youth D:
  1. Kami - 2nd
  2. Lienne - 4th
Great job ladies!

As soon as I figure out how to edit video off my phone (I need a program that will read it), I will post some video of the comp.

Next Saturday, Pocatello! New routes AND lead climbing: what more could you ask for?

SCS 2010 Schedule

The sport season is upon us and comps are coming up quickly. Here's the schedule:

  • April 10 - Spire Climbing Center, Bozeman, Montana (click on link for registration and comp information)
  • April 17 - Reed Gym, ISU, Pocatello, Idaho. Registration is at 9:00 a.m. with climbing from 10:00am-1:00pm. New routes this year including lead climbing (no bouldering).
  • April 24 - Momentum Indoor Climbing, Sandy, Utah (registration and comp information will be posted on Momentum's website soon)
  • May 1 - Rock Haus, Logan, Utah (Comp information to follow shortly. Click on the link for waiver)
  • May 8 - Nampa Recreation Center, Nampa, Idaho (waiver comp information to follow shortly)
  • May 15 - Big Sky Region Finals, The Quarry, Provo, Utah
  • June 12-13 - Division 1 Finals, Club Sport, Tigard, Oregon (by invitation only)
  • July 8-11 - SCS Youth Nationals, Stone Summit, Atlanta, Georgia (by invitation only)

A couple of things to keep in mind as we get ready for competition:

  • Most gyms require a new waiver every year for anyone that will be going into the gym. If you are under 18 years of age, the waiver must be signed by your parent or legal guardian. (no, coaches don't count as legal guardians) Don't get caught without one and have to forfeit competing.
  • Team Momentum members are required to wear their uniforms at competitions.
  • Local competitions are "redpoint" format while Regional, Divisional and National competitions are "onsite" or "modified onsite" format.
  • Competitions are run mostly by volunteers. Parents, if you are qualified to belay, consider helping out for a little while at competitions that you attend. Also, be sure to thank the people that make the competition possible.
  • Some gyms have preregistration and others don't. Gyms that offer preregistration often offer a discount to those who do.
  • If you haven't registered your climber with USAClimbing but you want their scores to count and/or you want them to be able to receive an invitation to Divisionals and Nationals, you will have 72 hours after the first of the three required local comps to get them registered.
  • If you don't plan on registering your climber with USAClimbing, there is an additional $5 day use fee added on to each competition.
  • Don't hesitate to ask any questions that you may have.

Team Momentum Competes at ABS 11 in Alexandria, Virginia!

Congratulations to the following Team Momentum members who competed February 13th and 14th in the ABS Youth Nationals at Sportrock in Alexandria, Virginia:

Ellise Shuman, 8th place FYD
Tavray Ma'e, 12th place MYC
Nathaniel Coleman, 6th place, MYC
Rachel Wedge, 24th place, FYB
Ben Tresco, 12th place, MYB
Palmer Larsen, 17th place, MYB

Each field was comprised of at least 30 of the nation's best, so the competition was very stiff! We are so proud of our athletes, who in most cases, were competing against kids with much greater big-comp experience. Because of their efforts, Team Momentum was 14th overall in the team competition. Next year's goal is to crack the top ten, and to place at least two athletes on the US Team. We can do it!

ABS 11 Big Sky Region Finals

Since the ABS 11, Big Sky Region schedule was set back in August, we've been worrying and complaining about having to drive to Bozeman, Montana in the middle of January to compete in the Big Sky Region Finals.

Since we competed in our last local competition at The Quarry in November, we've been watching the weather and driving conditions, biting our nails and hoping for a January thaw.

Finally, not only did Mother Nature deliver by holding off any storms that were supposed to hit, she posted temperatures in the low to mid 40's this weekend in Bozeman. Yes, it's true...Bozeman was warmer than Salt Lake this weekend and apparently the temperatures had dropped to near -20 in Bozeman last weekend so we really lucked out.

Not only did Mother Nature deliver, so did Team Momentum. It was a long day at Spire Climbing Center, as the first round of competitors checked into isolation starting at 7:30 Saturday morning with Qualifying beginning at 8:30 a.m. Of the 49 competitors at today's comp, 15 of them were Mo' Team members. While these 15 were readying themselves for competition, 4 more of Team Momentum's stars were in Boulder, at the Boulder Rock Club waiting their turn to show the Colorado/New Mexico Region what Utah is made of.

Despite a bad case of nervous stomach for Katie, some unsettling Mexican food at lunch for the Tresco brothers, and a long day for all, Team Momentum received invitations to ABS 11 Nationals in 4 of the 8 divisions we had competitors in. Following are the competitors and the places they finished:

Female Youth A:
  • Aspen Sanderson-2nd, Bozeman
Male Youth A:
  • Hunter Duffin, Boulder
Female Youth B:
  • Rachel Wedge-1st with an inviation to Nationals, Bozeman
  • Amanda Starwalt-2nd, Bozeman
  • Sarah Legg-3rd, Bozeman
  • Sage Knapp-4th, Bozeman
Male Youth B:
  • Palmer Larsen-1st with an invitation to Nationals, Bozeman
  • Ben Tresco-3rd with an invitation to Nationals, Boulder
  • Cole Bradburn-4th, Bozeman
  • Sam Tresco-4th, Boulder
Female Youth C:
  • Katie Shuman-3rd, Bozeman
Male Youth C:
  • Nathaniel Coleman-1st with an invitation to Nationals, Bozeman
  • Tavray Ma'e-3rd with an invitation to Nationals, Bozeman
  • Conner LaFleur-5th, Bozeman
  • Alex Tresco, Boulder
  • Weston Bradburn, Bozeman
Female Youth D:
  • Ellise Shuman-1st with an invitation to Nationals, Bozeman
  • Maisy Hayes-2nd, Bozeman
Male Youth D:
  • Caleb Bloodworth-3rd, Bozeman
In addition to the kids placing well, Team Momentum was, once again, given the Team Champion Award for the Big Sky Region. These kids did an amazing job and we're proud of all of them. It takes a lot of guts and hard work to compete.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the help and support of the amazing parents that tirelessly and many times thanklessly, bring their kids to practices as well as drive them around the country in order to attend these competitions.

Also behind the scenes are the gyms, gym owners, managers, staff, routesetters (thanks Molly! We love your routes and problems!), and everyone that works to coordinate these events. Thanks to all of you!

ABS 11 National competition will take place in Alexandria, VA, February 12-14. Good luck to everyone that received invitations to Nationals!

A complete list of final scores and places should be posted within a day or so at www.usaclimbing.net

Countdown to Regionals...

As we draw closer to ABS 11 Big Sky Region Finals, the obvious question of driving conditions is at the forefront of the minds of most parents. The driving forecast for January 14 if you're traveling then is a 20-30% chance of snow between Butte and Bozeman. On Friday, January 15, there is a slight chance of precipitation but it will be anywhere from mostly sunny to mostly cloudy the majority of the trip.

Here's a link to check the driving conditions.

If you are going to Boulder instead of Bozeman, you can click on the same link above and enter I-80 or I-70 as the interstate you'll be driving.

Please keep in mind that Saturday, January 9, is the deadline for registration for this competition. Here's the link: register

Countdown to Regionals...

As we draw closer to ABS 11 Big Sky Region Finals, the obvious question of driving conditions is at the forefront of the minds of most parents. Looking at the 10 day forecast, which shows up through January 14, it looks like the drive on I-15 should be clear most of the way but there is a 60% chance of snow in the Butte area (where I-15 connects with I-90). On I-90 between Butte and Bozeman, the 60% chance of snow decreases to 40%.

Here's a link to check the driving conditions.

Tomorrow we will be able to see the 10 day forecast through Friday, January 15, which is when most people will be traveling.
